Dremel is a brand name for a line of power tools that include sanders, scroll saws and screwdrivers. However, when someone mentions a Dremel, the term most often refers to the well-known high-speed rotary tool. This multipurpose tool can be purchased as battery operated or corded and is available in a single speed or multi-speed style. A Dremel is light in weight and small enough to use in restricted spaces, which makes it a perfect addition to a DIY tool set. Attachments The vast number of attachments are what make a Dremel rotary tool an excellent choice. Bits can be purchased to use for grinding, sharpening, drilling, cutting, polishing, sanding and cleaning. Additional bits are used for carving, engraving or routing. The tool can be used as a small reciprocating saw with a saber blade. Another attachment can be added to use the rotary tool as a small planer. Uses A Dremel can easily be used as a drill by using the right bit for the material you are working with. A WorkStation ™ attachment allows you to turn your handheld tool into a drill press that can even be used at angles other than 90 degrees. While most Dremels can accommodate bits with a 1/8-inch or 1/32-inch shaft, different collet sizes are available for some models to increase the variety. To change the bit, press the locking button and loosen the collet nut slightly. The bit will pull out. Insert the desired bit into the collet and then tighten the nut. To change the collet, press the shaft-locking button and loosen the collet nut. The nut unscrews by turning counterclockwise. Your tool should come with a collet wrench for this. Once the nut is removed, the collet will slip out. Install the new collet by reversing this procedure. A flexible shaft attachment lets you work in tight spaces and corners with a greater degree of control. Cutting wheels allow you to cleanly cut through metal, wood and masonry. Sanding accessories can be used as bands or discs, allowing for vertical or horizontal sanding. Polishing attachments are available in many grades of finish.
